A young doctor who got infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) felt thankful just for the chance to reach the age of 27 on Friday.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Carmina Fuentabella shared a photo of herself smiling and making the Korean finger heart on her hospital bed.

"Today, April 24, 2020, I celebrate my 27th birthday with probably the best gift yet—the gift of life," she said.

She also expressed her gratitude for the photos, letters, and video greetings she received from well-wishers.

Carmina admitted that she is yet to fully comprehend what happened to her, but she thanked her family and the medical staff who took care of her at the hospital.

"It felt like a dead end, but through everyone’s efforts and prayers I’m finally on my way to full recovery," she said.

She said that she is feeling better and raring to go back to the frontlines to help her colleagues.

Carmina vowed to be "more careful than before" when she returns to the battle against COVID-19 at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital.

According to the Department of Health, 19 of the 26 healthcare workers who have died due to COVID-19 in the Philippines are doctors. Over 1,000 medical frontliners have been infected with the virus.

"To all my fellow frontliners, I pray you all remain safe as this pandemic continues to wreak havoc," Carmina said.

"We still have a long way to go, but I hope we can all stay healthy as we try to defeat this virus," she added. —MGP, GMA News
